Thyroid Health Problems

The thyroid is a gland that regulates the body’s metabolism. Any imbalance in the body’s thyroid levels can result in debilitating thyroid health problems. A malfunction or even an infection could lead to drastic weight problems, which are hard to overcome. Thyroid health problems could occur due to both overactive and under active thyroid glands. Many incidences of thyroid health problems are caused due to poisoning by fluoride present in water.

Hypothyroidism and Hyperthyroidism

An under active thyroid results in sluggish metabolism and weight gain. This condition, known as hypothyroidism, is caused when the body has an insufficient quantity of thyroid hormone. Acute hypothyroidism slows the metabolism down tremendously, and whatever food is eaten is metabolized very slowly, leading to significant weight gain.

Hyperthyroidism presents the opposite problem: there is an over production of the thyroid hormone and the metabolism is revved up and goes into high gear. Food is metabolized very rapidly resulting in accelerated weight loss.

There are a number of medications on the market for the treatment of hyperthyroidism. The main shortcoming of most of them is that the underlying thyroid health problems often come back after a course of medication is stopped. For this reason, many patients with hyperthyroidism are advised to consider a treatment that permanently prevents the thyroid gland from producing too much thyroid hormone. Often this means some kind of surgery.

Thyroid Problems in Pregnancy

Links have been found between thyroid problems and complications in pregnancy. Alex Stagnaro-Green, an endocrinologist at the University of Medicine and Dentistry, N.J., New Jersey Medical School, feels that it will soon become routine to test women for thyroid health problems when they are pregnant. Research carried out indicates women with thyroid health problems being twice as likely to miscarriage than women who don’t. A study in Italy found that when women who had hypothyroidism were treated with a thyroid hormone, the pre-term delivery and miscarriage rate dropped.

Natural Treatment of Thyroid Problems

The treatment and prevention of thyroid health problems can be done through diet and supplementation. Marine phytoplankton is a thyroid health food that contains ingredients the body needs for an ideal metabolic rate and can prevent thyroid health problems. Go-ji, or lyceum, berry juice also has appears to have the capacity to balance the abnormal reactions of the body, preventing thyroid problems.

In recent years natural vitamins have been used in the treatment of thyroid problems. Anyone on thyroid medication should ensure an adequate daily intake of multivitamins, including vitamin C after consultation with their doctor. Kelp, which is a combination of minerals, vitamins and supplements, works well in alleviating thyroid health problems - mainly due to high iodine content. Supplementing the diet with Vitamin A could help prevent hypothyroidism because it enables the thyroid glands to absorb sufficient amounts of iodine.

A little care goes a long way in minimizing thyroid problems. When treated in the initial stages, the condition is easier to overcome.
