Thick Toenails Are Unattractive And Uncomfortable

By: Wade Robins

Thick toenails can be both unattractive and uncomfortable. Although they are usually caused by a fungus, thick toenails can also be caused both other factors such as an injury to the foot. Many people become embarrassed when their toenails thicken and they will not wear sandals or go barefoot around other people. Thick toenails are more common in elderly people than in young people.

If the thick toenail is caused by a fungus, there will probably be other symptoms as well. A toenail that is discolored from a fungus infection will turn yellowish or brown and may begin to separate from the nail bed. The fungus growing in the nail bed continues to grow and causes thick toenails to develop. If left untreated the fungus infection that causes thickened toenails can cause permanent damage to the nail, leaving it ragged and distorted. The fungus can spread to the skin around the nails and cause paronychia which is a surface infection of the skin around the nails.

Nail fungus infections account for about half of all nail disorders. They can be difficult to treat and repeated infections are common. The infections are particularly prominent in nails that have been continuously exposed to wet, warm environments such as sweaty shoes or shower floors. Some people make the mistake of trying to cover up thickened toenails with nail polish. This just traps the moisture in the nail bed and causes the infection to worsen. The two most common types of nail infections are dermatophytes and yeast. Dermatophytes is the most common infection that affects toenails and yeast seems to be the major culprit in fingernail fungus case. It is important to identify the type of infection so that appropriate treatment can be administered.

Regardless of what is causing the thick toenails, they can be reduced somewhat by careful filing and trimming. A nail file or emery board may be used against the upper surface of the nail to file away some of the nail material. This will make the thick toenail nail feel better and look better and will make the fungus itself easier to treat. Be absolutely sure that you clean all pedicure instruments with alcohol before using them. If you have professional pedicures performed you should take your own instruments so you will know that they are sterile.
