Red Wine – The Cancer Solution?

By: Xav Moldonio..

Could anything be more dreadful then having your doctor give you a diagnosis of cancer? Probably not. Still, who wants to chance it? There must be practical steps that can be taken to prevent it.

When it comes to health care, the world is full of interesting folksy theories on prevention. Eat this, wear that and so on. Of course, most of these guidelines simply do not work. Ah, but one of the bigger ones is starting to show real promise.

In some cases, the rumor or rule of thumb has some basis in fact. Red wine, for instance, has often been touted as preventing certain forms of cancer. The basis for this has often been the country of France, where cancer rates are low and red wine is a favorite beverage.

Despite the rumor mill and media reports, the alleged power of red wine has never been proven. Well, that has recently changed. Surprisingly, the early results of studies on red wine show that it appears to actually help prevent certain cancers. Imagine that.

Red wine is rich in phytochemcials, which are chemicals found in plants. In particular, the wine has a heavy concentration of polyphenols. Some of these polyphenos, such as catechins and resveratrol, have anti-oxidant and anti-cancer properties.

It is important to understand white wine offers little preventative assistance. Polyphenols are located in the seeds and skin of grapes. These are used in the production of red wine, but not white wine, or at least not in significant amounts.

Catechins are hugely vital to the prevention process. Why? Free radicals in your body are associated with mutations that can cause cancer, particularly aggressive cancer. Catechins essentially block free radicals from attacking health cells.

Red wine also contains high levels of resveratrol. Resveratrol is an interesting polyphenol. It is used by plants to defend themselves against disease. Resveratrol has been found to significantly inhibit cancerous tumor growth in animals.

Studies on causal relationships between drinking red wine and cancer are not yet definitive. They simply have not been underway for long enough. That being said, initial findings are positive.

When it comes to cancer and men, problems of the prostate are common. Well, drinking red wine may be the answer. Studies have shown that drinking a glass a day can cut the risk of this aggressive cancer by 50 percent. That is pretty amazing.

These initial results might lead one to believe red wine is a holistic answer to all cancer problems. It is not. It only appears to work with certain types. That being said, drinking a glass here and there certainly seems to be a smart move.
