Managing Stress: Long-Term Stress Problems

By: Andrew John

Any stress that an individual deal with regularly, but does nothing to keep it in check, can be considered long-term. Such stress is capable of causing several serious mental and health problems.

The first signs of chronic stress are depression and problems with keeping one's temper down. While they are bad enough, they are only a beginning. Soon after first bursts of rage, a stressed person starts to suffer from various health conditions. high blood pressure is probably the easiest to notice since it is the main reason for stress-induced deaths. So, soon after you become chronically stressed, you will have to start taking more and more pills from a doctor only to maintain your present health.

If stress increased only chances for a heart attack, it would only be a moderate problem. However, stress is also able to decrease the effectiveness of our immunological system, giving millions of bacteria a chance they have never had: to invade our bodies with only minimal resistance. Also, as our digestive system is effectively shut down because of stress, we may suffer from unexpected stomach problems ranging from mild indigestion to severe diarrhea that can put you in a hospital for weeks.

Diet problems usually comes right away. As stress forces us to consider everything around us either as a friend or as a foe, we feel urged to either cease eating altogether (anorexia) or just the contrary - we start top eat tons of junk food. As stress develops, diabetes is a more and more probable outcome. As our ability to know the right from wrong is seriously clouded by depression and other psychological problems, we may often feel as if there was no way out to normality.

Last, but not least, stressed people ten do to suffer from insomnia. With so high blood pressure and subsequent adrenalin secretion, it is extremely hard to go to sleep. As the result they are more and more tired which leads to feeling even more stressed. The sleeping pills are one of the most common solutions - but they will cause their share of problems later, when their negative effects on the stomach and brain start to be obvious.
