Is Your Child Overweight? Here's What To Do

By: Sirkka Wolke

You've seen the headlines -- children everywhere are overweight. Maybe your child struggles with weight or is living a lifestyle that could lead to weight problems later in life.

Children have always loved candy and starchy foods. But recent years have brought big changes in the way families live. Now, instead of childhood obesity being rather rare, it's almost the norm in many places. Even if your child is just a few pounds over their ideal weight, the foods, habits, and activities he or she has currently could be setting them up for major weight problems in the years ahead.

These days families are busier than ever. Parents and guardians frequently work demanding and multiple jobs to meet the modern high cost of living. For many, the days when a stay-at-home mom prepared nutritious meals from scratch is little more than a distant memory.

Greasy, fatty, chemical laden fast food is the norm for many families. And busy parents are more than happy to let their children keep occupied with TV, video games, and Internet activities.

All this adds up to an ideal situation to create overweight, unhealthy, and often unhappy children. In my new book, I outline 7 simple steps to help children lose weight, keep the weight off, and live a more healthy life.

In my years as a nutritional consultant to families, I often had parents ask me how their child could lose weight. I developed a program that doesn't use dieting, measuring, or chemicals. And it works! The weight practically falls off the child, then stays off.

You see, most children don't need radical diets to reach their preferred weight. If children eat a sensible diet, stay away from the usual onslaught of treats and snacks, and get the daily exercise that comes naturally for most kids, they'll lose the weight and won't gain it back.

Of course, you know as a parent that devising a program for your child is one thing. Getting your son or daughter to actually follow the plan can be quite another. That's why I spend just as much time showing parents how to motivate their child to make the right health choices.

Rather than getting on the latest "miracle" diet and losing pounds quickly only to gain them back, I work to help families live a more healthy lifestyle over the long term.

Getting in the habit of eating right and maintaining an active lifestyle can make children healthier, happier, and more successful for life. In the end, that's what every parent really wants for their child.
