Hypnosis Can Help You Break A Nail Biting Habit

By: Alan B. Densky, CH

If you have ever made an effort to curb your nail biting habit, you understand just how hard it can be. Perhaps you have put on bandages or gloves over your fingers, or tried bitter nail polish. Maybe they worked temporarily, but ultimately you found yourself with ragged nails and bloody cuticles once again.

The reason that a superficial nail biting cure is not likely to get results makes sense when the reason behind the behavior is examined. The nail biting habit is persistent and very similar in nature to other stress-related mannerisms, like skin picking and hair pulling. Basically, these actions satisfy an innate longing; thus if the urge is not satiated or eliminated, the behavior will continue. No amount of bitter nail polish will curb the need for nail biting or give the sense of relaxation you get after gnawing on your nails.

In that vein, you cannot actually cure nail biting, but do not be concerned: Thankfully, time-tested remedies that can lead to recovery are available. There is a three-step plan that can efficiently stop nail biting if you are motivated to do so. The primary step involves hypnosis.

For those unfamiliar, hypnosis conjures ideas of people watching swinging pendulums or acting like an animal for others' enjoyment. Rest assured that at its root, hypnosis is merely profound relaxation in a trance-like condition. A lot of people erroneously think that hypnotic trances are like sleep, but you are fully conscious and awake, simply more relaxed and amenable to suggestion.

In fact, many of people go through some type of self-hypnosis daily, during times when we tune out many of the distractions around us to concentrate on an individual task while remaining fully conscious. It occurs effortlessly while we daydream, read or watch television.

Because nail biting is stress related, the more successfully you can release and work through tension and anxiety, the more winning your move to stop nail biting will be. The primary aim of hypnotherapy is to afford you a way to sustain a relaxed state always.

You are encouraged to look into various hypnosis options, such as traditional hypnosis, Ericksonian hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques, to enhance both the relaxed state and to achieve a more complete sense of welfare. A competent hypnotherapist will know which option is ultimately best.

The following step to curbing a nail biting habit is to become sentient of the habit since nail biting is executed unconsciously. Hypnotherapy is helpful for this stage, as connecting with the unconscious mind to elicit the conscious mind's awareness that you are about to bite your nails can help deeply. This allows you to make the assessment to bite your nails. And because hypnotherapy has already helped lessen the causal stress, the powerful impulse to bite your nails has been notably decreased, or even abolished.

The last action for using hypnotherapy to discontinue biting nails is to totally eliminate the original compulsion to chew or bite. There are methods that can literally program you with an impulse to refrain from biting your nails, because just as practices can be effectively curbed due to hypnosis CD's, they can be established.

Hypnosis CD's are effective with ending behaviors such as biting your nails because, even though the session will not miraculously make absolute self-control, it can strengthen your tenacity and make certain that options you make during a stress-free state will still remain when you are under stress. Additionally, hypnotherapy is able to help you correspond with your unconscious mind to get it to parallel your conscious mind so both units help with your goal.

It is important to note that some potential hypnosis clients hold a fear of having suggestions planted or of recalling "hidden" memories while in a trance. Rest assured that hypnotherapists are formally skilled and accredited and adhere to the strictest professional and ethical procedures. The systems used by hypnotherapists to make positive suggestions to your unconscious are entirely distinct from the ones employed or used during memory recall or age regression. So the use of hypnotherapy for effectively curbing the need to bite your nails will not result in unintended memories or behaviors.

CONCLUSION: Nail biting is an inherent impulse like any other, and strength of will only is generally not enough to stop the behavior. Using hypnotherapy or hypnosis CDs and all other resources available will more likely result in a comfortable, successful end to your nail biting.
