Most people need some type nutritional supplement to meet their nutritional needs. The reason is we live in an environment that actually makes it hard for us to get adequate nutrients from a food source. Supplements are used to bridge the gap of getting the daily requirement of vitamins, minerals and enzymes. The first vitamin supplements that were developed used synthetic versions of vitamins and minerals. The United States Pharmacopeia or USP created the first standardized and inexpensive way to meet the RDA requirements.

The majority of nutritional formula supplements are synthetic versions of vitamins and minerals. The disadvantages are now more formidable than is previous generations. There are many reasons for this. The answer is when it is a synthetic vitamins it is not from a food source. A study in the Journal of Food Chemistry noted that less than 10% of the synthetic minerals are bioavailable for utilization. This generation receives the least amount of nutrients from a food source.

The reason is simple our food supply has the least amount of available nutrients. The reason is basically that the advances in technology have changed the way American’s eat.

The food supply is manufactured and that means that the public is eating large quantities of processed products. They may be filling and give the consumer plenty of calories but fall short on the amount of nutrients they supply. Technology has altered farming practices. When you have fruit and vegetables picked before they should be and then sent across the globe a lot of the nutrient content is affected. Many of today’s health problems can partly be blamed on inadequate nutrition.

This is a problem because the plants that provide the most useable vitamin and minerals are not as high in nutrients as they were in previous generations. In the 21st century there is a need for good vitamin supplements. It is best to consume Organic and local grown produce to meet your nutritional needs. When you supplement, natural whole food supplements are still considered the best. The need to supplement is probably the greatest now.

The environments high level of stress, toxins, pollutants, and modified food deplete your vitamin and mineral stores. In America you can not get enough of the nutrients you need from food. This is one of the reasons you can be obese while your body is starving for nutrients to work properly. A good nutritional formula includes a whole food base for its vitamin supplements.

If this was not serious enough the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) is well below the amount that you need for optimal performance. Recognizing that vegetable and fruit sources are the natural and best sources for vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals is the one way to ensure that you select supplements that are whole food based. It is prudent to check labels to see that bottle states that is an organic plant based vitamin and mineral supplement. This is a way to insure that your nutritional supplements are made of fruit and vegetable extracts.
